Official Trailer for Poetic ‘Trees and Other Entanglements’ Doc Film
“It builds on itself with time to become this. That’s a story. That’s a life well lived.” HBO has revealed an official trailer for a breathtaking documentary film about trees, yes indeed about the magnificence of trees, with the title Trees and Other Entanglements. Filmmaker Irene Taylor crafts a poetic meditation on nature, mortality, and the passage of time in her exploration of our symbiotic nexus with trees. 🌳 Weaving together several stories of arboreal adoration, Trees and Other Entanglements unfolds as a deeply human tale of our connection to the natural world and to one another. This premiered at the Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride every year celebrating nature docs. What can a film about trees tell us? “The layers reveal the tender heartwood of humans and trees alike, both honest & sensitive. These stories unfold as an arboreal and deeply human thriller.” Featuring a cast including Bonsai master Ryan Neil, photographer Beth Moon, forest warrior Dirk Brinkman, recollector Carolyn Feeney, and lumber heir George Weyerhaeuser Sr. This looks like a rejuvenating and wholesome film not just about trees, but about humanity’s connection to trees.

With the use of artful imagery, photography, and animation, the film introduces us to a diverse range of individuals entangled with the trees they love. Through the intimate observations of an American bonsai tree master, a photographer who travels the world to capture images of rare trees, a man dedicated to planting saplings after clear-cutting, and a woman celebrating the memories of her childhood, Trees and Other Entanglements traces a path of wonder and communion. Also running through the documentary are the stories of George Weyerhaeuser Sr., a lumber baron of Tacoma, whose life was shaped by a childhood kidnapping; and the story of the filmmaker herself, whose struggle to eradicate ivy from choking age-old trees is a metaphorical bid to free her from the invasive grip of Alzheimer’s. Together this mosaic of lives entwined with nature forms a breathtaking continuum of growth and destruction, of life, loss, and rebirth.
Trees and Other Entanglements is directed by the acclaimed, award-winning doc filmmaker Irene Taylor, director of the documentary films Hear and Now, Beware the Slenderman, Moonlight Sonata: Deafness in Three Movements, and Leave No Trace, plus many other short films previously. Produced by Irene Taylor and Peter Richardson. This initially premiered at the 2023 Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride earlier this year, and at the Hamptons Film Festival. HBO will debut Taylor’s Trees and Other Entanglements doc on HBO TV + streaming on Max starting on December 12th, 2023 coming soon. Who’s wants to watch this?
