James Gunn has congratulated Josh Hutcherson and Mackenzie Davis after revealing their voice roles in an upcoming animated DC TV series. Last week, it was confirmed that Hutcherson and Davis had been cast in DC Studios’ Mister Miracle. Gunn has reaffirmed that Hutcherson will play the titular character while Davis will voice Big Barda.
Gunn congratulated the duo in a social media post, but did not provide a release date for the show. The post also featured a new image of the characters with an explosion in the background.
DC Studios announced the Mister Miracle animated series at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2025. Tom King is writing all eight episodes of the series, which adapts his acclaimed 12-issue comic book run with artist Mitch Gerads.
The series follows Scott Free, the world’s greatest escape artist, and his wife, Big Bard. Scott Free is the adopted son of Darkseid. Confirm Darkseid’s role and his motivations in the series before including further plot details.
Josh Hutcherson’s DCU role is part of a larger animated series lineup
Mister Miracle is the second animated TV show set in the growing DC Universe. The cinematic universe’s animation slate began with Creature Commandos, which is getting a second season. The DCU is also getting a new Blue Beetle animated series, with Xolo Maridueña reprising the role following his appearance in Man of Tomorrow.
DC has also released animated projects outside the shared DCU continuity. These projects include Harley Quinn and Batman: Caped Crusader, among others.
Gunn had previously stated that DC Studios will cast the same actors for voice roles and live-action appearances. It remains unclear whether Hutcherson and Davis will also portray these characters in live-action DCU projects.
The eight-episode Mister Miracle series is targeting a 2028 release, though an exact premiere date has not been announced.
